Dropped your phone in water? Do this first

What you do in the first few minutes after a phone meets water can make a real difference. Here is a calm, practical checklist.

Do these straight away

  1. Take it out of the water and switch it off. If it is already off, leave it off.
  2. Do not plug it in. Charging a wet phone can cause short circuits and more damage.
  3. Remove the case, any accessories and the SIM tray.
  4. Wipe the outside gently with a soft, dry cloth.

What to avoid

  • Do not use a hairdryer or any strong heat. Heat can damage internal parts and push moisture deeper.
  • Do not put the phone in rice. It does not draw moisture out reliably, and dust and grains can get into the ports.
  • Do not press buttons, shake the phone or try to charge it to see if it still works.
  • Do not blow into the ports.

Why speed matters

Liquid can leave residue and start corrosion on the circuit board over time. Salt water and sugary drinks are especially harsh. The sooner the phone is opened, cleaned and checked, the better the chance of a good result, although we cannot promise one in every case.
